Evaluating Your Leadership Strategies

 Ka mau te wehi!

I have been really pleased in your growth as leaders over the last three lessons you have devoted to training your 9M  Fitness groups.
Now I have two blogging tasks for you.
  1.  I would like you to post one of your  evaluative reflections here for the week.
  2. The second expectation I have is that you respond/feedback to two  blogs belonging to your classmates.
Just as I expect your reflections  will be carefully considered and constructed, I have high expectations that your comments and feedback will be.....

Positive        Thoughtful       Helpful

  1. Circuit Training
Today Kowhai, Hori and I took 5 boys ( Sonny, Haki, Ethan, Sheldon, Jahrome) through a circuit training. We did 1 minute of hard work then a 30 second rest and rotated around. We had planks and russian twists that focused on our core, Bicep curls and arm raises that focused on our arm muscles and squats and box jumps that focused on our leg muscles. We did one whole circuit then gave them a 3 minute rest while in that rest Whaea Ruth came in and showed us 2 more exercises that we could involve called back arch and the knee raise and hold this workout was used to strengthen their erector spinae and abdominals. Since they had already done a circuit the first time we took them they knew how to do all of the different exercises so all we had to do was encourage them. At the start they were very unfocused but once we started they set their mind to it. They asked a few questions on why they need to do this I said “ This is a component called muscular endurance. The reason we are doing this is to help you guys on resitting your situps, pushup and plank test”.

    1. Thank you for contributing your blog so promptly Sarah... but ..read the task again to ensure you explain how/when/why you applied your two leadership strategies and evaluate the effectiveness of those strategies.

  2. Today, in our group (Lily, Lia, Kira) we(Sam,) took them to interval running training. The leadership strategies that I demonstrated/ applied today were Developing/ providing motivation, and developing partnership.
    Developing/ providing motivation
Providing motivation to these girls was unnecessary, but however I still provided motivation, because this was a type of training that they were unfamiliar with. For example, while running I reminded them to keep pushing themselves, positive feedback, and providing the basic stuff , such as things like using your arms, breathing, etc. Why use this method because interval running training can be quite challenging for distance runners (all of the three of them). This is because they used to run at the same speed for about 90% of their run. This interval training helps target all three of the energy systems, so I understood from their perspective that I could have been very challenging. I tried to focus on more positive motivation rather than negative, such as “One more girl, keep pushing yourself, don't give up, we got this!”(They also wrote this in their work booklets). As a result, they continue to work hard and successfully finish our training plan. Also, provided non-verbal motivation by trying to do my best as my other partner injured herself.
    Developing partnership
Developing partnership with the people around is very important for being a good leader, especially if you are going to work with them more than one time. For example, today they were more comfortable around us. I know this because they were able to express themselves more. Which helped contribute to a positive work environment for us to be in. As a result, set them and us up for success. Which did because they finished both sets successfully. I felt like these girls were very welcoming at the start, so it was not stressful for us. However, even if it was other people, it is still very critical to develop good partnership with our trainees. In order to help them and us to achieve both sides goals.

  3. Tena koe Sophia. I'm pleased you are reflecting upon and evaluating the two leadership strategies you used. Making a judgement is essential for evaluation and supporting that judgement with explanations, elaborations and specific examples. You noted that "Providing motivation to these girls is unnecessary..." further explanation of why you made that judgement would be good. Also, by "stuff' do you mean teaching points? or technique reminders? - either terms are much better than "stuff" Keep up the good work Sophia

  4. Today I had the opportunity to help Hori train/lead his trio (Sonny, Haki, Quiden) for today's PHe lesson. We had taken them out for a quick 10min stretch and jog to the end of the rugby field and back. Firstly me and Hori were preparing them for a 12min cooper run to test and see how they would perform around the rugby field. But we then got a better idea to take them on the back track and do 4 reps of 1min jogging then a 20sec sprint and a 30sec walk. Their response to us telling them had changed and showed me that they were more keen and confident to do the 4 reps then doing a 12min coopers run due to their different engagement levels and fitness. WIthin the 2nd lap Haki had gotten fatigued from the running and was slowly getting tired. But with a little encouragement he pushed all the way and I felt comfortable running with him because it showed that he was determined to improve. Sonny and Quiden did the whole 4 reps with great engagement and determination. At the end of class we had pumped out a 5min ab workout and me and Hori keeped an eye on there technique while doing it with them to help and ensure they know how to perform and do ab workouts properly.

    1. I enjoyed reading this DESCRIPTION (what happened) Kowhai which was aided by the use of good vocabulary and varied sentence structures but tomorrow I want to work with you to ensure you understand what an evaluation is. Also, you didn't explicitly identify the leadership strategies you applied but I can see from your description that you are using some instinctively. That is your 'super power' Kowhai. You care enough for the people you are leading to pay close attention to how they are feeling, how they are coping and quickly respond to keep their motivation and effort high. Kaha koe ki te manaaki o akona. Ae ra,he ngakau nui koe.

    3. Although this is a good response i feel like it had more description than evaluation itself. maybe change a few words around and this would result in you having a well set out and worded evaluation my bro

  5. Today we did a 24 min run through Ruapekapeka, 12 min run to see how far we could get then 12 mins back. I was really impressed on how all the girls went, even Grace and Teyja. The leadership strategies we all used was providing motivation, action planning and developing partnership.

I demonstrated developing partnership because I stayed with KT through the run because I didn't wanna leave the person at the end and I just wanted to cheer her on. While i was with her i asked her “how do you think your gonna go on cross country” and she replied “ i don't know because i'm not that much of a good runner” so i told her “ this is what were training you up for and the 12 minute cooper run so this hopefully will help you”. Even when me and Teyja were explaining our activity to them today they asked why.

I also demonstrated motivation because I kept pushing KT but then she hurt her ankle so we had to stop. I then had to go a bit easier. I still tried to push her but she kept saying her ankles were sore so I just said let's walk it out. Even though her ankle was sore she still tried to run for a bit but not for long so at least that was good. I saw Carney up ahead so as I was still with KT I would say “keep pushing Carney you're doing good” or to all the girls “nice going girls” and i would see then still pushing themselves to not stop. I think this was helpful for the girls just to keep them going and it worked.

I also showed action planning. It was good to have our lesson planned out before the day. This helped us to get organised before the girls got to the gym because we were less stressed and we knew what we were doing so we could just get dressed and go do what we needed to do.

  6. Kapai Pearl.Yes the taha tinana goal you are pursuing with your trainers is to improve their parformance in the Fitness post tests and build their confidence (taha hinengaro) and capability to run the cross country but if you look back on our What Is Leadership? shared doc you will notice how many of your peers identified being a role model that others want to follow as leadership. YOU wrote on that doc 'leadership is showing a good example in front of your peers' By running with TK you are not only able to provide motivation to her consistently (as you so clearly explained) but you are modelling the work effort you are wanting from her.You should also add to the action planning strategy evaluation that pre-planning enabled you to forewarn your trainers to bring shoes to run in,which, in turn enabled your trainers to run - pain free.I see a lot of caring in the interactions you had with TK - even Carney and caring is an essential ingredient for developing partnerships. Have you considered the partnerships you are developing with your co-leaders? Finally,I have been pleased to note your growing commitment to your trainers and how your demonstration of leadership strategies are strengthening with each lesson. Haere tonu!

  8. Tuesday 4th August
    Training 4
Strategies we used: action planning, motivation

Today Tipene and I took Mohaka, Tepona and Quaden up Ruapekapeka for a 2k run. We ran in intervills, sprinting for 1 minute then 1 minute rest. For me it was quite hard to keep alongside the boys because they were much faster and fit than me, especially going uphill. I found it much easier to keep up when running down hill. Running closer to the boys let me motivate them and push them, I said things like “good job guys” and “keep going”.
Tipene and I action planned the night before:

We made a backup plan for if we weren’t able to go offsite, which is a way of action planning. Action planning really helps the training go underway more efficiently, because an organised group gets the job done. So we told Mohaka, Quaden and Tepona EXACTLY what we were going to be doing and they coped very well with our instructions/plan. At the end of the training we asked for feedback, here is a link to what they said: Feedback

Looking at what they said about the training, I know for next time to make it a little more challenging for them. They are very fit boys and it was good to see what kind of fitness level they are at in terms of Cardio. It was also good to have tipene there to run alongside them when I was unable to, because Tipene matches their fitness level very well.

    1. I like how you think ahead just in case if it was going to rain (planning fall back), and how you reflected on your own plan for next time. I reckon next time decrease the rest time, for example, instead 1 minute, rest for 45 seconds

    2. I like how you thought of having a back up plan if it were to rain. How you encouraged your students showed thatyou are a good leader

    3. In paragraph two you are clearly recognising the link between the leadership strategy you applied and the impact it has on the effective functioning of your group Teina.I'm pleased at the development of your evaluative thinking. I could watch the Feedback video in your Leadership Log but unfortunately, video clips don't transfer well into a blog.I think you and I need to learn how to do this. LOL.

  9. This training session, 2 strategies for leading that I used were action planning, again, and group management. I used action planning in this training by knowing that I was the only leader who was going to be there and to get myself prepared to teach 3-4 kids by myself and help them to perform at a good level, as it was only the first training. I turned up about 5 minutes before the lesson started as requested by Whaea Ruth and that gave me time to set up in the aerobics room and make sure I knew what I was doing for that lesson. I knew I had to have an action plan because Paris messaged me 2 nights before mentioning that she would not be attending school this week and maybe next week. Action planning contributed to the effectiveness of the group by relieving a little bit of stress and wasted time because I knew what I wanted to do with the students because I wanted to see how fit they were within their arms, legs and core. I will most likely use action planning with every training because it has a positive effect on the operation and effort of the group because I turn up confident in what I'm doing and it makes the students feel confident in me leading them.

I used group management in this lesson as it was 3 students trusting me to lead them in the right direction. The group was all boys so it made it easier for them and I to work together and get through the workout with a good level of performance and effort. I managed the group by putting us in a “circle square” so we were all facing each other and so we created a situation where we were all in this together.

    2. Well done Michael.I like your growing awareness that pre-planning enables you to greet and lead your trainees calmly, confidently and knowledgeably.I saw that you had established your training space and equipment before 9M arrived too.I agree - this planning and preparation DID engender confidence in your trainees from the very beginning which I saw you sustain using group management strategies throughout your session. Pai rawa atu.You gave one example of a group management strategy. For future reflections, give even more detail (examples) of group management.

  11. Today Grace, Pearl and I took our team for a 24min run through Ruapekapeka Road. 12min run and 12 min run back. The leadership strategy we used was proving motivation throughout the run, developing partnership and also action planning.

Personally I think everyone did well, everyone pushed themselves especially Joh. Today I was running alongside Joh, and I was really impressed with her ability to push herself. She started off a bit slow at the start and with a bit of motivation she ended up catching up to me and ran alongside me. I was also pleased with Carney because Although she was behind Joh and she continued to push herself to be able to catch up to Joh and I.

I demonstrated a developing partnership with Joh because as I was running beside her, and I constantly motivated her to keep running, I wanted her to keep running beside me just so she could push herself to the best of her ability. Whilst I was motivating her I could really see that she was really trying to push herself. She then asked “why are we running so far” and I said “ to help you with the 12min coopers run”, and we had a bit of a break and then ran back to the school, and she still pushed herself, I was really impressed with her performance.

I also demonstrated motivation towards Joh because I kept pushing her to keep running beside me, Joh started to slow down and then started walking, so I had then stopped and told her “let’s keep going”. When I was telling her to keep going she kept going and didn’t stop very much. The whole time we were running I was just encouraging to keep running.

Grace, Pearl and I also showed action planning because we planned the week before that we were going to take the girls for a run through Ruapekapeka Road, and it was well planned because we also had a plan B if it had rained. It was also a less stressful training because we knew exactly what we were going to do even if our plan A wasn’t going to work.

    2. Well done Teyja. This reflection tells me you are able to explain, with examples HOW you are applying your leadership strategies.I also see you are recognising the impact your application has upon your trainees. Whilst you told me you had a Plan B ready if needed you didn't need it. I would like you to think further about HOW having Plan A so clearly defined impacted upon the effective functioning of the group.

  13. Thursday 30 july
The skills I demonstrated were developing and providing motivation and developing partnership.
Today I trained 4 students in agility from the class of 9m. I demonstrated developing and providing motivation today, when pushing my trainees the hardest they can go when they are doing the exercises. As an example one of the exercises we did in our circuit today was the ladder run. I figured out that my students work harder not just by verbal motivation but mental motivation.

A challenge for them to work harder is 100 times more effective than just telling them to work harder, for an example today when I was training my students I was watching one of them on the high knees ladder part of the circuit, I noticed he was doing it but not as fast or hard as he could, he was putting in minimal effort when he could push a bit harder, instead of telling him to push harder I decided to give him more of a challenge, I decided to do the ladder with him and told him to see if he can catch up to me, this had an awesome impact on his effort and work ethic, he had a goal to strive to. This helped encourage him to work that much harder. This strategy had a huge positive outcome on the team, this is because when my students work harder they then feel good in themselves because they pushed themselves to their limits, this also impacts on how they treat others in the team, it also helps that as one person works harder, competitiveness can normally influence others to work harder.

    1. I know that this strategy that I used is definitely working I could find it on their faces, I also got feedback from one of my tainees saying that something he felt difficult was “pushing himself,” this shows that he really pushed himself which is great, if he found it difficult that is an example of had work and a good challenge, this feedback was really awesome to get for me and helped me asses how hard I can push my students.

Next time to excel developing and providing motivation I can make sure to create as many challenges in the training as possible, my kids are really hard working and giving them a challenge can create them to work even harder.

    2. Your reflection is detailed and insightful Hayley. You are clearly demonstrating you pay close attention to how your trainees are responding to your leadership strategies. You are also able to explain the 'flow on effect'from individual response to development of 'group identity' and effective functioning of the group.

  14. Today I also used developing partnerships within my group, I used and developed this strategy by communicating and joining my team, I found that I communicated better and developed stronger partnerships with my team when I joined in with the exercise, I felt that when I join in with them that I could relate with them easier and talk with them easier, creating a stronger bond, this also helping to their listening and showing progress in their work because when our bond as a team gets stronger so does their work effort . This is because not just me but my students felt that when I joined in I was on the same level and just like one of them. As an example when I was taking the warm up today instead of just telling them what to do I joined in with them and did the exercise with them, this creates an unspoken bond with the group because not only are we all working together, but it shows them that I'm not just sitting there telling them to improve things which they might not know I can even do myself.

This strategy really helped with not just the work ethic of my trainees but also the bonds and partnerships of our entire group. This was shown in the training when one off my students got left with an exercise that he/she had already done but the trainee was a bit shy and didn't really want to speak to anyone about it and just went to redo the same exercise he/she had done a couple rounds before, but one of the other students from our team realised and talked to the team about it, we all sorted and figured it out and the problem was solved.

Without the new partnerships between our team these kids probably never would have noticed anything or thought to help, but he helped and we together solved it. Next time my goal in our team is to get our team even closer so the shyer kids in our group will straight away speak up about it, but for now the progress we have made as a team is awesome :)

    1. Another great evaluative reflection which contains empathy and insight Hayley. I really like the example you explained support your judgement of the group bonding developing. Your leadership style is definitely growing the empathy of the trainees within your group. One feed forward - it would be best if you refer to your followers as students or trainees rather than kids.

  15. Today Teyja, Pearl and I took our team out of school to do cardiovascular training up the Ruapekapeka road. We decided to do this training in hope that it will improve the girls running times in the coopers run and also help them with the cross country that is coming up soon. So we made sure to inform them about why we are doing the run, what we are working on and what we are helping. The purpose of this so that they can understand the goals they want to reach. We timed our run so that we could see how far the girls got in 12 minutes and then see if they could get back to where they started in another 12 minutes. I personally felt like the girls did an excellent job with the run. I stayed up the front following Jhaylar and when we had reached the 12 mins we were up to 2.5ks. When running with Jhayler I was modelling the work ethic that I wanted to get out of her. When we turned around we yelled to the other girls that the 12 minutes was up and it was time to run back. During the run back we intended to do it in 12 minutes but ended up doing it in around 15 due to the girls having little breaks of walking. At the end of the run I was very pleased with how the girls worked.

One of the leadership strategies that we used was Developing or Providing Motivation. On the run I was continuously working on providing motivation to our team. Telling the girls to keep going and that they were doing good seems to motivate them to continue running. I also kept reminding them about the purpose of the running and how it will help them with the testing.

I used the leadership strategy action planning by making sure my team and I knew what we were going to work on. It also helped when making the lesson flow a lot more easier. It was good using action planning because we were organised so as soon as we got the girls ready we were ready to go. We notified the girls before the training that they needed training shoes to get them prepared for the run which would help make the run easier for the girls.

The goal setting strategy worked well in this training because it helped with the Coopers Run testing. We identified something they wanted to improve on and worked towards achieving it. The goal the girls tried to work on was to see how far they could reach within the 12 minutes. When I asked Jhayler if she was happy with her 2.5 k in the 12 minutes she said that she was very happy.

    1. When you feed in the 'why' you are asking for certain behaviour/effort (purpose) it helps your trainees to internalise and focus better.Repeated reminders of purpose develops intrinsic motivation so I can see the overlap between your two leadership strategies of motivating and goal setting Grace.
